According to Golden Finance, the Salvadoran legislative body has approved a comprehensive constitutional reform that allows for indefinite presidential re-election, effectively enabling President Naib Bukel to continue in power after the end of his current term. The Salvadoran Legislative Assembly stated that Boukel's New Thought Party and its allies passed five reform proposals with a vote of 57 to 3, which also extended the presidential term from five years to six years and canceled the final election vote. Opponents warn that this move will centralize power and threaten democratic systems, as these changes remove term limits that have long constrained executive power.
Anna Figueroa, a member of the New Concept Party, proposed to end Bukel's current term two years early, so that the presidential and parliamentary elections can be held on the same schedule. If approved, Bukel's current term will end on June 1, 2027, instead of June 1, 2029.
