Jamaica’s greatest challenge has long been the perception, and reality, of violence. When we formed the government in 2016, the murder rate stood at approximately 49 per 100,000. Today, that number is between 20 and 25 per 100,000, cut in half. While still above the regional average of 15, our progress is undeniable. Over the past decade, we have invested 98 billion in security, creating the most sophisticated crime-fighting capability in Jamaica’s history. This has targeted organized criminal enterprises, commonly called gangs, that drive much of the serious violence in our society. But violence in Jamaica goes beyond gangs. It is present in our homes, our schools, and our daily interactions. That is why we are also focusing on peace-building, strengthening mental health services, expanding restorative justice, and working with churches and civic groups to change how we resolve conflicts. Our goal is to build a Jamaica where disputes are settled with reason and emotional regulation, not violence. This is the long-term work of nation-building, and we are well on our way.(Andrew Holness)
