True friends don’t need to meet every day, don’t need to drink, eat, or party together, and sometimes don’t even need to say certain things. Years ago, I faced a really tough situation, and a brother helped me out big time. Even though I was close to bankruptcy at the time, I still offered to give him some money as a token of gratitude, but he refused. That was the end of it—I just said thank you. I didn’t even treat him to a drink or a meal, but I remembered it in my heart. During the 2020 DeFi summer, I told him there were some opportunities on-chain recently and suggested he bring some money over so we could do something together. He put in about $20,000, and it grew to nearly $200,000, which I sent back to him. Later, I heard he turned that $200,000 into over 10 million RMB. When we met recently, he brought it up again and said he wanted to thank me. I told him, “You don’t need to thank me—it’s your own character that brought you this blessing.” A true friend doesn’t act with the expectation of getting something in return. Back then, I was on the verge of bankruptcy—who knew if I’d ever recover? Even if I did, who knew if I’d turn out to be ungrateful or even repay kindness with betrayal? His help came from his heart, from his innate sense of peace and action. No matter how the other person behaves, he does what he believes is right. True friendship is built on shared values and character.
