[Nigerian Man Sentenced to 6 Years for $2 Million Cryptocurrency "Romance Scam" in the U.S.]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado announced today that 37-year-old Nigerian national Adetomiwa Seun Akindele has been sentenced to 71 months in prison for conducting a cryptocurrency "romance scam." It is reported that in 2018, Akindele posed as an Italian-American businessman named "Frank Labato" and defrauded a Colorado widow of approximately $1.7 million in cryptocurrency through a dating website. FBI Denver Division Special Agent Mark Michalek stated that such scammers often target victims' trust and emotions. After serving his sentence, Akindele will be deported back to his home country. Experts have pointed out that between 2020 and 2024, such criminal networks have transferred over $75 billion through cryptocurrency exchanges.
