[U.S. House of Representatives Advances Stopgap Funding Bill to Avoid Government Shutdown] BlockBeats News, September 18 – The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives cleared the way on Wednesday for a vote later this week on a stopgap funding bill aimed at preventing a partial federal government shutdown within two weeks. Lawmakers voted 216 to 210 to pass a measure allowing the House to debate the temporary bill, which would fund federal agencies through November 21, giving the House and Senate more time to reach an agreement on a comprehensive appropriations bill for the 2026 fiscal year starting October 1. Republicans aim to pass the stopgap funding bill by Friday and send it to the Senate for consideration. The bill must also pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Trump to take effect. While Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, the stopgap bill, known as the "Continuing Resolution" (CR), requires 60 votes to pass in the Senate. However, Democrats oppose the bill and are working on alternative proposals. (Jin10)
