Remember back in college when we were reading Saussure's English books in class? It reminded me of Solana choosing its Chinese name, so we used GPT to dive into a discussion. Saussure, the father of modern linguistics, believed that the meaning of language is neither innate nor dictated by reality, but rather created through the 'internal relationships' within a system of signs. He introduced the classic concepts: Signifier: The form of words, sounds, or symbols, like 'BTC' or '₿'. Signified: The concept we associate with it in our minds, like 'decentralized digital currency'. Source of meaning: It’s not because it 'corresponds' to reality, but because it 'differs from other signs.' A 'tree' has meaning because it’s not 'grass'; 'Bitcoin' is special because it’s not fiat currency. Bitcoin isn’t just a code system; it’s a system of meaning constructed by language. Bitcoin wasn’t just 'invented'; it was 'named.' Names, symbols, narratives—they turn cold, hard code into 'digital gold.' This is the process where language gives technology its 'social life.' For developers, 'Bitcoin' means a peer-to-peer electronic cash system; for investors, it means 'scarce digital gold'; for libertarians, it’s a 'symbol of resistance against central bank power'; for critics, it’s a 'speculative bubble.' The same 'signifier' (Bitcoin) has completely different 'signifieds' in different community contexts. So, what linguistics discusses here isn’t 'whether Bitcoin exists,' but 'how different contexts construct different meanings of Bitcoin.' Bitcoin’s existence is a fact of physics and code. But 'what Bitcoin means'—that’s entirely the work of language, a product of social consensus. The world isn’t 'only language,' but 'the world we understand is a linguistically constructed world.' Bitcoin’s code makes it exist; Bitcoin’s language makes it believed. The relationship between reality and language isn’t about 'which is more true,' but about 'how they condition each other.' Without language, meaning cannot be generated; without reality, language becomes empty. The Solana example: A name is the signifier of meaning. Solana’s current 'signifier' is the English word Solana, derived from the Spanish word 'Sol,' meaning sun. In crypto culture, it symbolizes 'speed, energy, light, youth, sunshine.' Choosing a suitable Chinese name is about injecting a signified into this signifier. It’s different from the names Bitcoin and Ethereum. This is definitely a tough one.
