[Reddit Sues Perplexity and Other Companies for Illegal Data Scraping] According to a report by Jinse Finance, Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI and three other companies, accusing them of unauthorized data scraping from the Reddit website. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, alleges that data scraping companies Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy, and SerpApi collected Reddit data through Google search results with the intent to resell it. The lawsuit claims that Perplexity purchased this data from at least one of these companies. With the rise of AI models that rely on large datasets for training and delivering relevant results, Reddit's growing data repository has become a valuable commodity. Reddit has signed agreements with OpenAI and Alphabet, authorizing them to use Reddit data for training purposes, but has also taken legal action against companies that have not entered into formal agreements with it. Earlier this year, Reddit filed a similar data scraping lawsuit against Anthropic in a San Francisco court.
