The pursuit of the infinite is the pursuit of completeness. All human logic-based sciences are the byproducts of using finite life to understand an infinite world. Take Kant's four antinomies as an example—at their core, they are paradoxes arising from using the finite to infer the infinite. The so-called "Ant Wars" in the scientific community (the debate between formalism and intuitionism in mathematics) and the Continental/Anglo philosophical divide (rationalism vs. empiricism) both stem from methodological differences in understanding infinity. Two epistemologies of infinity: 1. The finite comes from the infinite. The infinite exists first, and then the finite. From this perspective, our cognition is limited. Empiricist philosophy holds that everything is a summary of finite experiences we encounter in an infinite world. Formalist mathematical logic, on the other hand, posits that we must first define infinity (as Cantor did with his set theory on infinity). Once infinity is defined, we can comprehensively study all finite phenomena. 2. The infinite comes from the finite. The finite exists first, and then the infinite. Rationalist philosophy believes that universal laws can be derived from finite experiences to adapt to the infinite. Intuitionist mathematics follows this logic as well, rejecting the notion of an actual infinity that cannot be described or defined, and only acknowledging the concept of potential infinity (e.g., the countable infinity of natural numbers). This intuitionist perspective, when combined with formalism, gave rise to structuralism, which underpins modern computational theory. By integrating evolutionary theory into the understanding of the finite and the infinite, we can unify the two. It’s not that the finite comes first, nor that the infinite comes first. Both coexist and evolve simultaneously. It’s just that our individual cognition is confined to the finite, so we cannot fully comprehend it. However, the matter that constitutes us exists within the infinite. This phenomenon also proves the simultaneous existence of the finite and the infinite. That is: our lives are finite, and our consciousness is the limited cognition that emerges within the finite span of life. Yet, the matter that makes up our being is infinite relative to us as individuals. This interplay of the finite and infinite can continue to iterate and evolve infinitely. This core logic is the evolutionary logic of genetic inheritance, and it is also the evolutionary logic of Bitcoin.
