The US student debt crisis is getting worse:
The average borrower now holds a record 39,375 of federal student loan debt.
Americans aged 50 to 61 carry the highest debt burden, at 47,860, up from ~34,000 in 2017.
Average student loan debt for those aged 35 to 49 is up to 44,850, well above the 36,000 seen in 2017.
Debt for those aged 25 to 34 has remained largely stable at 33,000 since 2017.
In total, Americans owe a record 1.81 trillion on student loans.
