We have already allocated 400 million to support critical mitigation works across constituencies, including drain cleaning and civil works , to help reduce the risk of flooding and landslides as we prepare for Tropical Storm Melissa.
While the Government does not have unlimited resources, Jamaica is now in a stronger fiscal position to respond to natural disasters. Through prudent management, we have put in place budget contingencies, a Disaster Fund, parametric insurance, and catastrophe bonds that allow us to respond effectively without excessive borrowing.
Our focus both getting through the storm, and ensuring that Jamaica recovers quickly; that farmers can return to their fields, hotels can reopen, electricity and water services can be restored, and our economy can continue to grow.
Good management minimizes impact.(Andrew Holness)
