[Yonhap News: Cryptocurrency flow between major South Korean exchanges and Cambodian exchanges surges to 12.8 billion KRW, potential large-scale money laundering suspected]
According to Foresight News, Yonhap News reported that in 2023, the total cryptocurrency flow between South Korea's five major virtual asset exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, Gopax) and Cambodia's Huione Guarantee reached 12.8645 billion KRW, a nearly 1,400-fold increase compared to 9.22 million KRW in 2023. In 2023, the inbound amount from Cambodia was 8.95 million KRW, while the outbound amount was 2.8 million KRW. Last year, these figures surged to 1.049457 billion KRW and 231.188 million KRW, respectively. Bithumb's transaction volume increased from 9.22 million KRW to 12.42646 billion KRW, accounting for the majority of the flow, while Upbit grew from zero to 366.91 million KRW. Huione Group has been subjected to international sanctions for suspected money laundering, and its virtual asset service platform, Huione Guarantee, is suspected to be a high-risk channel for fund flows. Financial regulators are considering imposing restrictions on financial transactions involving Cambodian criminal entities to address money laundering and illegal overseas remittance issues.
