The popularity of x402 has been gradually decreasing recently. I haven't talked much about this before, but I am quite optimistic about the narrative of x402. It's just that I am not very interested in the memes that come out. The market is still too eager for a new narrative with inscriptions like a Ti Shi Qi.
Even if you don't play with something new, you still have to understand it. After a brief understanding, x402 is an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase, which is based on the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code. Its goal is to make web pages and AI agents native to the Internet standard of "automatic payment" in cryptocurrency.
In the past, to access a paid API, digital content, cloud service, it was usually necessary to register an account, do KYC, bind a credit card, subscribe to a model, and other processes. The goal of x402 is to eliminate these tedious processes, allowing AI agents to make payments using cryptocurrency and complete operations that call other services such as ChatGPT, data interfaces, and cloud computing power.
Narrative is very meaningful, and the widespread application of AI agents is also a trend. But the ecology, tools, standards, and compliance are still in the early stages of construction. At the same time, it has also given rise to new questions, how can AI agents trust the returned results when they can independently pay for any API call fees?
Traditional oracle machines rely on "reputation consensus", where multiple nodes vote to confirm data, which is not very suitable for the complex, private, or non deterministic data required by AI agents. At this point, zero knowledge proofs come in handy, such as @ DeAgentAI's zkTLS (Zero Knowledge Transport Layer Security) technology.
To summarize the mechanism of zkTLS, nodes call external APIs (such as OpenAI) off chain and generate encrypted "notarization" through zero knowledge proofs, proving that they are indeed communicating with the real server and returning unaltered data. Subsequently, on chain smart contracts only verify the validity of the proof without trusting anyone. Simply put, let mathematics prove that you really did what you said, instead of making others believe that you did it.
The two hot tracks of AI agents and on chain prediction are highly dependent on data verifiability, and related solutions will also become hot topics in the future. The value of V God's original phrase 'zk is the end game' is still rising.
