[South Korean '00s-born' Drug Lord Who Laundered Millions of Dollars Using Bitcoin Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison]
According to DL News, a South Korean '00s-born' drug lord who engaged in money laundering and drug trafficking using cryptocurrency has been sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined $4.2 million by the Ulsan District Court. Three of his accomplices were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 30 months to three years.
The court found that since March 2020, the drug lord had been operating multiple drug sales channels via the Telegram messaging app, primarily selling drugs smuggled from Vietnam. His group smuggled drugs using international courier services and distributed them through a method known as 'dead drops' (hiding drugs in public places and notifying buyers to retrieve them). Payments for transactions and distribution commissions were made using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which were also used to launder drug money, involving approximately $4 million.
