South Korea hopes the new 'Basic Act on Artificial Intelligence' will position it as a leader in the field, while the European Union's 'AI Act' will be implemented in phases by 2027. Globally, there are still differences in approaches to AI regulation, with the United States favoring a more lenient approach to avoid stifling innovation. The law was formulated after extensive public consultation, and companies will have at least a one-year grace period before authorities impose administrative fines for violations. The penalties could be severe. For instance, if companies fail to label generative AI, they could face fines of up to 30 million won (approximately $20,400). Jeong Joo-yeon, a senior researcher at the Korean startup alliance Startup Alliance, stated that the wording of the law is very vague, and companies might default to adopting the safest approach to avoid regulatory risks.
