I spent a chunk of the day going through my rolodex talking to contacts about the Dem primary in Texas. The TL;DR is: -Many feel Crockett may have torpedoed her career in how she handled yesterday’s messaging. There were a few key takeaways: 1) Endorsement Shift: There are a lot of big Dems and industry groups who were going to stay out of the Texas Senate race until after the primary. But, the way Crockett handled yesterday’s issues changed that. I’ve heard from sources that at least two major Dem names are planning to endorse Talarico in the coming weeks. According to at least one staffer, the decision came after Crocketts response to the Allred claims was “lacking in the kind of leadership we need right now” Like the quoted tweet below, you’re likely to see more Texas and national names enter into endorsements, including ones who have traditionally been more center policy. 2) Donors Pullback: One major Dem donor I spoke with in Texas said Crockett’s response felt “underhanded” and suggested that even if her campaign had nothing to do with the rumors, the failure to take the high road in messaging doesn’t reflect the sound judgment Texas needs. Another told me “I’m not donating to run Republican attack ads. Tell me what’s good about you, without attacking other Dems or don’t take my money” Both had previously contributed to the Crockett campaign. One donor had already been shifting towards Talarico and said this “sealed the deal” for them. Neither intend to make another Crockett donation. One other Crockett donor, noted that it hasn’t changed the fact that she supports Crockett, but that she was “deeply disappointed” by it and “thought Jasmine was better than that” 3) Party Backing Wavers: Crockett enjoys great national favorables and party support, that could have given her a bright future in the party even in other states. Discussions among many serious donors, and senior Dems, now suggest that influential people in Congress and the DNC/DCCC would be highly hesitant to back support her in another run. With one contact telling me that in a rant, one senior Dem went as far as to say Crockett “spoiled years of good will” A few others noted neutral responses, but no one I spoke with has heard ANY senior Dem speak positively about Crocketts response. The best was neutral. The average was negative. ————————- Now: Over the years myself and many have found Crockett to be reasonable and friendly. I’m not sure what has gotten into her or her campaign this time around, and frankly if it’s coming from advisors or spokespeople she should fire them and work on building bridges. But sending out a backhanded press statement on unfounded rumors, has done way more damage than I think her team would have realized. It landed poorly across the base, across major donors, and even in the upper levels of the party - and it’s pushing people off the sideline in favor of Talarico. If Crockett wants to salvage her standing she’s got a short window, to make major changes in her staff and her approach. But right now, it looks like the path she is taking to try and win this race, are likely to not only cost her the race - but also her career.(Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth))
