[Hong Kong Police Crack Down on Cross-Border Crypto Asset Fraud Targeting Overseas Students] According to the Hong Kong Wen Wei Po, the Hong Kong police have dismantled a cross-border fraud syndicate. The group impersonated law enforcement officers to scam mainland Chinese students studying overseas, coercing them to travel to Hong Kong to purchase gold pellets as a 'security deposit.' The gold was then melted down, converted into cash, and laundered through cryptocurrency exchanges. A total of seven cases were reported, involving approximately HK$7 million. The police launched an operation codenamed 'Capture Commander,' arresting multiple suspects and recovering about HK$5 million in assets related to the case. One suspect has been formally charged and will appear in court, while the other arrested individuals have been released on bail and are required to report to the police in early May.
