There was even a criminal investigation into Powell over the $2.5 billion renovation of the Fed’s headquarters. So he wants to stay on to make sure everything’s fine before retiring with peace of mind. By staying on the board, Powell occupies a seat, preventing Trump from appointing his own people to fill it, acting as a counterbalance. This old guy is tough!
