[Anthropic Calls for a Global Pause on Cutting-Edge AI Development]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on June 5, Anthropic urged leading artificial intelligence labs to consider slowing down their development pace, pointing out that the evolution of AI systems is progressing at an extremely rapid rate. These systems may soon achieve self-improvement without human intervention, a capability that could pose significant societal risks.
In a blog post published on Thursday, Anthropic disclosed internal data that meticulously documented the astonishing speed at which its most advanced models are improving in performance. The article noted that the progress of AI models appears to be moving toward 'recursive self-improvement,' where AI systems can autonomously optimize themselves without human involvement.
The article stated: 'We believe that if the world could choose to slow down or temporarily halt the development of cutting-edge artificial intelligence, allowing societal structures and related research to keep pace with technological advancements, it would be beneficial for the world.'
The article proposed reaching a global agreement to define how the pace of AI development could be slowed and to establish a mechanism to verify whether competitors are adhering to such an agreement.
