a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently discussed the US Government Efficiency Department (DOGE)'s priorities in a podcast, saying the department plans to push for increased days in the office for federal employees. He noted that federal office buildings in Washington D.C. currently have an average occupancy rate of only 25%, with many employees working from the office one to two days a month, and some even going to the office only two days in two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model aligns with the requirements of federal employee status and pointed out that DOGE has proposed "innovative ideas" to reduce government spending and optimize regulation. He believes the current prevalence of remote work poses a challenge to productivity and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had proposed slashing $2 trillion in "government waste," and reports show that only 6% of federal employees work regularly from the office, with Musk further suggesting that the percentage of employees working full-time in the office could be as low as 1% after excluding security and maintenance personnel.
