a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently discussed the work priorities of the U.S. government's Department of Efficiency (DOGE) in a podcast, stating that the department plans to push for federal employees to increase the number of days they work in the office. He noted that federal office buildings in Washington, D.C., are currently only averaging a 25% occupancy rate. He pointed out that many federal employees only go to the office one or two days a month, and some even only go two days every two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model was consistent with the requirements of federal employee status, and pointed out that DOGE had proposed "innovative ideas" to cut government spending and optimize regulation. He believes that the current prevalence of remote work has presented challenges to work efficiency and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste," with reports showing that only 6% of federal employees work regularly in the office. Musk further pointed out that the percentage of employees working full-time in the office, excluding security and maintenance personnel, could be as low as 1%.
