a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently proposed a plan called "Department of Government Efficiency" (D.O.G.E.) aimed at pushing federal employees back to the office. He pointed out that the average occupancy rate of federal office buildings in Washington, D.C. is currently only 25%, with many employees working from the office just one or two days a month, and some even going in only twice in two months. Andreessen believes that this model may not be in line with the requirements of federal employee identity and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. He said that D.O.G.E.'s work focuses on optimizing staffing, reducing government spending, and streamlining regulations, adding that the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had also proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste," and reports indicate that only 6% of federal employees work regularly in the office. Musk even pointed out that, excluding security and maintenance personnel, the percentage of employees working full-time in the office could be as low as 1%. Andreessen previously stated that he is an "unpaid volunteer" for D.O.G.E. and has turned his support to Trump after the Biden administration's crackdown on cryptocurrencies.
