a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently commented on the work focus of the U.S. government’s Efficiency Department (DOGE) on a podcast. He said the department is planning to push for federal employees to increase the number of days they work in the office. Currently, federal office buildings in Washington D.C. have an average occupancy rate of only 25%. He pointed out that many federal employees only come to the office one or two days a month, with some even going only two days in two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model aligns with the requirements of federal employee status and noted that DOGE has proposed “innovative ideas” for cutting government spending and streamlining regulation. He believes that the current prevalence of remote work presents challenges to work efficiency and questions whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy suggested cutting $2 trillion in spending by reducing government waste, but the related plans are currently in the suggestion phase. Reports show that only 6% of federal employees work regularly in the office. Musk further pointed out that excluding security and maintenance personnel, the percentage of employees working full-time in the office may be as low as 1%.
