a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently discussed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on a podcast, stating that the department plans to push for an increase in the number of days federal employees work from the office. He pointed out that federal office buildings in Washington D.C. currently have an average occupancy rate of only 25%, with many employees only going to the office one to two days a month, and some even only going two days every two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model meets the requirements of federal employee status and pointed out that the DOGE has proposed "innovative ideas" to reduce government spending and streamline regulation. He believes that the prevalence of remote work currently poses challenges to work efficiency and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy suggested reducing government spending by $2 trillion by eliminating waste, but these plans are currently only in the suggestion phase. Reports indicate that only 6% of federal employees work in the office regularly, and Musk further pointed out that excluding security and maintenance personnel, the percentage of employees working full-time in the office might be as low as 1%. Andreessen also stated that he is an "unpaid volunteer" for DOGE, supporting Trump after the Biden administration cracked down on cryptocurrency.
