#Federal employees return to office#

a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently stated on a podcast that the U.S. government's Office of Personnel Management (DOGE) is focusing on pushing federal employees to increase the number of days they work in the office. He pointed out that federal office buildings in Washington D.C. are currently only at 25% occupancy on average. He noted that many federal employees only go to the office one or two days a month, and some even only go to the office two days in two months. Andreessen questioned whether this model is consistent with the requirements of federal employees and pointed out that the DOGE has proposed "innovative ideas" to cut government spending and optimize regulations. He believes that the prevalence of remote work is challenging work efficiency and questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy suggested cutting $2 trillion in spending by reducing government waste, but these plans are currently only in the suggestion stage. Reports show that only 6% of federal employees work regularly in the office, and Musk further pointed out that excluding security and maintenance personnel, the percentage of employees who work full-time in the office may be as low as 1%.
