According to data from blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer, scams that lure investors into joining malicious Telegram groups surged by 2,000% from November 2024 to January this year, far exceeding the growth rate of traditional phishing attacks.The scam tactics have also become more sophisticated, going beyond impersonating cryptocurrency influencers to targeting legitimate cryptocurrency project communities on the platform through seemingly safe invitations. Attackers leverage fake verification bots, trading groups, airdrop groups, and “exclusive” insider groups to trick users into downloading malicious software, thereby stealing passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, and browser data.With users becoming more vigilant against traditional cryptocurrency scams, attackers have shifted to using malware for their fraudulent activities, making the Telegram platform a new target. Scam Sniffer reminds users that any legitimate cryptocurrency service will not ask users to execute commands, install verification software, or run scripts from the clipboard. Users should exercise caution and avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading software from unknown sources.
