Ethereum core developers have decided to create a third testnet, Hoodi, to better prepare for the Pectra upgrade. After some vulnerabilities were found in the first two testnets, the Pectra upgrade has now been postponed at least until late April.
Ethereum Foundation developer Tim Beiko stated after the Ethereum core developers' meeting on March 13 that the Hoodi testnet will launch on March 17, with the Pectra upgrade for this testnet set to activate on March 26.
Beiko mentioned that if Pectra runs smoothly on the Hoodi testnet without major issues, core developers may set a date for Pectra's mainnet launch as early as 30 days after Hoodi's activation.
This means Pectra could officially launch on the Ethereum mainnet as early as April 25.

Pectra integrates features from the Prague and Electra proposals and will implement more than a dozen Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), most of which aim to bring more functionality to Ethereum wallets and improve user experience.
It will also incorporate scalability proposals, doubling the number of "data blobs" used for data availability from three to six.
Pectra was initially planned for launch on the Ethereum mainnet by the end of 2024, but its release has been repeatedly delayed due to client readiness issues and synchronization bugs found in the first two Ethereum testnets, Holesky and Sepolia.
Pectra was launched on the Sepolia testnet on March 5, but shortly after, Ethereum developers began seeing error messages on their geth nodes and discovered that empty blocks were being mined.
Christine Kim, Vice President of Research at Galaxy Digital, stated that Hoodi will "simulate" the Ethereum mainnet as closely as possible by launching a set of validators similar to the current mainnet operation.
At that time, at least 20 million test staked Ether (ETH) will be distributed to 11 client teams and 5 staking operators.

Beiko pointed out that some aspects of Pectra may still be tested on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets.
The launch of the third testnet comes as Ethereum core developers reached a consensus during a "core developers meeting" on February 13 to deploy future Ethereum protocol upgrades at a faster pace.
Cryptocurrency-focused venture capital firm Paradigm has also called for Ethereum core developers to release protocol updates more quickly to achieve more milestones on their technology roadmap and maintain their competitive edge as a leading Layer 1 blockchain.
