According to AFP, Pavel Durov, the founder of the social media platform Telegram, received approval from a French court last week to temporarily leave France and travel to Dubai.

Durov was arrested at an airport in the suburbs of Paris on August 24 last year. French authorities cited his failure to effectively curb criminal activities on Telegram as the reason for his arrest. Durov faces charges that could lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years and hefty fines. On August 28, Durov was released on bail after paying 5 million euros, but he is required to report to the police twice a week and is not allowed to leave France.

Although the specific details of the ruling remain unclear, Durov's departure has sparked discussions about jurisdiction, privacy, and the responsibilities of tech leaders in addressing illegal activities on their platforms.

Media reports suggest that Durov's legal case may have been resolved, or he has obtained permission to leave while legal proceedings continue. Durov has not publicly confirmed his departure, and French officials have not issued a formal statement. Reuters has sought comments from the Paris prosecutor's office but has not yet received a response.

Following reports of Durov's permission to leave France, the price of TON, the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network developed by Telegram, surged over 20%. However, like the entire crypto market, the token has struggled to build upward momentum in recent months. Since reaching a peak of $6 in December last year, the price of TON has been on a downward trend. Last Tuesday, the price of TON fell below $2.5 for the first time in over a year.

According to Gate.io, as of 1:30 PM this Monday, the price of TON was $3.5, with a 24-hour increase of 1.62%, and a weekly increase improved to 30.6%. Analysts believe that while the price of TON has rebounded, it faces resistance at the $4 mark and is unlikely to return to the historical high of $8.2 set last June unless it develops another project like DOGS or NOT to reignite market enthusiasm.

Durov's arrest caused a stir in the crypto community, with widespread speculation about the implications for the future of the tech and crypto industries. Additionally, it marks another concerning phenomenon of holding founders and developers accountable for the use of their platforms.

Durov has long portrayed himself as a champion of free speech, but due to the lax moderation on Telegram, many terrorists, drug dealers, and far-right organizations have used the platform for communication, recruitment, and organizing activities. As a result, Telegram has drawn significant attention from governments and regulatory bodies, leading to increased scrutiny and regulatory pressure.

Moreover, Durov is not alone in the ongoing battle between tech leaders and regulators. Last year alone, 12 prominent tech leaders faced legal scrutiny globally, from Elon Musk to Julian Assange, as the confrontation between tech entrepreneurs and governments intensifies. This year, tensions may escalate further, and Durov's case could become a pivotal point—will it embolden privacy advocates or provide regulators with more grounds for action?

The answer remains to be seen, and the future direction is worth watching.
