An American tourist in the UK was reportedly drugged by a person impersonating a taxi driver, resulting in the theft of $123,000 worth of Bitcoin stored on his phone.
According to My London, Jacob Irwin-Cline called an Uber to return to his accommodation after drinking at a bar in London.
Cline stated that he mistakenly followed a private hire taxi driver who appeared to be similar to an Uber driver, without carefully checking the Uber trip information on his phone. He only realized this crucial detail afterward, as the vehicle driven by the impersonator did not match his booking.
The American tourist described that once he got into the car, the driver offered him a cigarette, which Cline believed might contain a rare and potent sedative called scopolamine. Cline further stated that the cigarette made him extremely compliant and drowsy, leading him to lose consciousness for about 30 minutes before regaining awareness.
Shortly after Cline woke up, the driver ordered him to get out of the car. As Cline was about to leave the vehicle, the driver suddenly accelerated away, hitting him and fleeing the scene with his phone, which contained his private keys and access to his cryptocurrency accounts.
This unfortunate incident comes amid a rising trend of kidnappings, extortion, armed robberies, and ransom demands targeting executives, investors, and their families in the cryptocurrency industry.
In May of this year, several kidnapping incidents involving cryptocurrency investors, industry executives, and their families occurred in succession.
On May 3, the father of an unnamed cryptocurrency exchange owner was successfully rescued by French police after law enforcement raided the location where the victim was held captive by an organized crime gang that had demanded a ransom for the release of the hostage.
Following this, Pierre Noizat, CEO of the Paymium cryptocurrency exchange, experienced a kidnapping attempt involving his daughter and grandson in Paris.
This incident occurred in broad daylight, where assailants attacked the family and attempted to forcibly drag them into a parked vehicle. However, Noizat's daughter and another individual successfully resisted and repelled the masked attackers.
As violent attacks against cryptocurrency investors and industry professionals increase, individuals concerned have begun to enhance their personal security measures, with many potential targets hiring bodyguards and adopting private security solutions.
