The Open Network Foundation (TON Foundation) has announced the appointment of former Visa executive Nikola Plecas as its new Vice President of Payments.
According to a blog post on May 28, Plecas will be responsible for developing and executing the payment infrastructure strategy for TON.
His tasks include expanding network capabilities, managing financial partnerships, and ensuring compliance across jurisdictions to support the foundation in serving over 1 billion Telegram users.
Plecas stated, "Joining the TON Foundation is a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of global payments."
According to the announcement, Plecas will lead the construction of a globally interoperable and robust payment architecture to meet the growing demands from developers, businesses, and end-users.
Plecas has accumulated extensive experience during his tenure at Visa, playing a key role in crypto-related projects, including product development and global commercialization.
He helped optimize entry processes in multiple markets and developed Visa's digital currency engagement model for European clients. Additionally, he was involved in numerous fintech and crypto issuance projects and frequently represented Visa at major industry events.
TON Foundation CEO Max Crown noted that payments are a core pillar of the TON roadmap. "With deep industry expertise and a clear vision for expanding payment infrastructure, Nikola brings the experience and leadership we need to accelerate TON's global growth."
Cointelegraph has reached out to TON for comment but has not received a response as of the time of publication.
On May 1, the decentralized stablecoin platform Ethena partnered with TON to offer its stablecoin to Telegram's user base of over 1 billion.
This collaboration will deploy Ethena's USDe (USDE) and Ethena Staked USDe (sUSDe) within the TON blockchain. The sUSDe variant will be integrated under the name tsUSDe, allowing Telegram users to access dollar-denominated savings directly within Telegram.
Notably, the TON Foundation is also working closely with Tether to connect TON to Tether's USDt ecosystem via LayerZero in February 2024.
As part of its ambitious expansion plans, TON expects to connect its ecosystem to at least 100 chains, including Ethereum (ETH), TRON (TRX), and Solana (SOL).
