Ripple Launches $200K Attackathon to Strengthen XRPL’s Institutional DeFi Framework

Ripple’s expanding commitment to institutional-grade decentralized finance (DeFi) security has led to a high-stakes collaboration with cybersecurity platform Immunefi aimed at strengthening blockchain infrastructure. Immunefi announced on Oct. 13 that it is joining Ripple to launch a $200,000 “Attackathon” to secure the proposed XRPL Lending Protocol.

This competition underscores both organizations’ focus on preemptive security and transparency as DeFi transitions from experimental frameworks to institutional-scale financial infrastructure. Immunefi detailed:

Ripple and Immunefi are collaborating to launch a $200,000 Attackathon to secure the proposed XRPL Lending Protocol as part of the institutional DeFi roadmap.

The Attackathon will run from Oct. 27 to Nov. 29, preceded by an education phase starting Oct. 13. Security researchers will examine C++ codebases associated with core XRPL standards, including the XLS-66 Lending Protocol, XLS-65 (Single Asset Vault), XLS-33 (Multi-Purpose Tokens), and XLS-80 (Permissioned Domains).

Immunefi emphasized their commitment to accessibility: “To support researchers new to XRPL, Ripple and Immunefi are providing full access to the Attackathon Academy throughout the Education Period.” Participants can share in the $200,000 prize if a valid bug is found, while a fallback pool of $30,000 will be distributed among those providing valid insights.

The initiative directly ties into Ripple’s Institutional DeFi Roadmap—outlined in its Sept. 22, 2025, update, which details the XRPL’s progression toward integrated lending, tokenization, and zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) privacy features. That roadmap highlights XRPL’s evolution into a leading blockchain for real-world assets, boasting over $1 billion in monthly stablecoin volume and robust compliance mechanisms through tools like Credentials and Deep Freeze.

Immunefi stated:

This protocol is being launched to support real-world credit markets on XRPL. It is designed for institutional integration, not speculative yield.

The Attackathon therefore marks a critical milestone within Ripple’s vision of combining credit, compliance, and confidentiality at the protocol level to anchor the next decade of institutional blockchain finance.

  • What is Ripple and Immunefi’s $200,000 Attackathon?
It’s a major DeFi security initiative designed to protect the XRPL Lending Protocol and reinforce institutional-grade blockchain security.
  • When will the Attackathon take place?
The competition runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 29, 2025, following an educational phase that begins on Oct. 13.
  • What will researchers analyze during the Attackathon?
Participants will audit key XRPL C++ codebases, including XLS-66, XLS-65, XLS-33, and XLS-80, to identify potential vulnerabilities.
  • Why is this collaboration important for DeFi’s future?
It strengthens Ripple’s vision of institutional-grade DeFi, emphasizing security, compliance, and privacy to drive real-world financial adoption.
