How I Lost a Million Dollar Account and Reflections.

Thinking back now, I still break into a cold sweat; if I could do it again, I would definitely……

I used clickbait; my Twitter is not worth a million dollars, it’s just invaluable to me. For someone who makes a living by writing, losing the tool for survival is terrifying, especially due to a very basic mistake. This article will briefly summarize what happened, how it was resolved, and reflect on it, hoping to provide all creators with a cautionary tale to continuously remind them.

What Happened

I set an age, triggering a basic error.

To activate the "Subscription" feature, I had to set my age. After entering my date of birth as June 9, 1996, I was logged out, and then I kept getting error messages and couldn't log in.

I bought this account, which was an old account registered in 2007, so entering a year after 1999 triggered the age restriction for "not under 13 at registration." Wow, I never thought of that! Accounts that are under 13 years old will be locked, and then you will be required to verify again.

In fact, I was in an error state for about 10 hours before I found out that I needed to re-verify. Unable to log in and not knowing how to handle it was really stressful. Twitter doesn't have much customer service; the help section only has explanations but no submission portal. I was genuinely panicked, especially since I was on my way to Hong Kong to attend several important events at Consensus, and I had a few projects that I had already partnered with that needed to be published.

How I Resolved It

I was ready to start from scratch; it was painful, but I had to accept it. My previous account with over ten thousand followers had also been shut down before. On the way to the airport, I received an email from X, officially notifying me that my account was locked due to age restrictions and that I needed to submit documents for review. If the review is passed, the following changes will occur:

‣ Posts made before turning 13

‣ Likes on posts made before turning 13

‣ Private messages sent and received before turning 13

‣ Personal profile information excluding username and birthdate

‣ Saved posts, lists, and collections

All of these will be deleted. Additionally, your following and follower numbers may take 24 hours to display correctly.

Step 1

Logging back into Twitter would directly redirect you to an explanation page, and at the bottom of the page, there is a "form" where you can reopen and resubmit your documents. Besides username and email, you need to upload a valid ID; I uploaded my passport.

Many resources stated that you could submit any identity information as long as you meet the age requirement, and some foreigners even uploaded their mother's ID and it was approved. Since I had already verified as a creator, it was safer to submit my real information.

After submitting, the page indicated that this process could take up to 72 hours to complete.

Step 2

In fact, I received progress in just 24 hours. After 24 hours, the first step's page changed, requiring me to confirm the changes mentioned above, and it would automatically delete the actions I did before turning 13. There was a progress bar indicating confirmation - system processing - completion, which should consist of three steps.

At this point, I received another email stating that the system was processing my request.

Step 3

This time, it was quick; I received the unlock email in about 5 hours. Logging back in, the page showed that the process was completed, and I was finally in! My account was restored.

However, my following and followers were both at 0, and additionally, my avatar, banner, and bio were all gone…… I had to set everything up from scratch again. When I saw the age section in my profile, I felt terrible. Some resources say that if you get locked, you lose your blue verification badge when unlocked. Since I am under @GoKiteAI, my blue badge was still intact, and there was no need to reconfigure anything on the creator side.

Thank God, the account is finally back.

Some Reflections

If a system can run smoothly, do not change it casually.

If it weren't for the need to enable "subscriptions," I would not have entered my age, but I was not aware of Twitter's age rules, which led to this incident. Losing the account is simply a devastating disaster for a creator, which also inspired me to immediately examine similar crises around me.

These crises often go unnoticed in daily life, but once they occur, they can change the entire landscape. This is the "Black Swan Theory." In the cryptocurrency space, I believe the following crises must be taken seriously.

Freedom

I prioritize freedom, especially for those in the mainland still physically present in the industry. If a situation threatens freedom arises, everything becomes very troublesome. Recently, new laws have become increasingly clear; many previously debatable gray areas are now very clear.

OTC traders, project parties, commissions, etc., are all high-risk groups. Just because nothing has happened does not mean it won't, and just because something has happened does not mean it is over. If freedom is destroyed, then nothing matters, which must be emphasized in the special national context of the mainland.

Many people are being self-deceptive, holding onto a sense of luck. I am not being alarmist; the less attention you pay daily, the more severe the damage when a crisis erupts. Is this in line with the concept of a black swan?

Health

This is almost as important as freedom, but it is slightly lower on the priority list compared to freedom. This environment is extremely detrimental to health, both physical and mental. Prolonged sitting, alternating day and night, casual eating habits, and being in a constant state of mental stress can result in a health check…… that would scare you, right?

Some instructors continue to share various supplements, which are quite good; however, the core issue is still to change some habits. Balancing body and mind between FOMO and FUD, periodically going outside for a bit of nature has proven to be effective.

Communicate more with friends; sometimes I can go days without speaking to anyone and feel a bit isolated…… Currently, the health concerns I am more focused on include my eyes, cervical spine, lumbar spine, etc.

Tools

The tools you eat with must have contingency plans. What if I truly couldn't recover the account this time? After all, these are still centralized products, and there are currently no better, widely accepted decentralized alternatives, so develop habits:

‣ Prepare a backup account

‣ Reduce risky operations

‣ Abide by Twitter's rules

Additionally, I have established my own TG channel, where I will update some content that is quite different from Twitter; in extreme situations, at least I will retain a group of old friends with more interactions.
