We used to be the leaders of AI, now we are its guides - to put it bluntly, we are its repairmen, serving tea and water.
It sounds like self-mockery, but I am serious.
For the past two years, we have been discussing a question: who is the master and who is the subordinate, humans or AI?
The mainstream narrative is that humans are the masters. AI is a tool, an assistant, a servant. We "use" it, "drive" it, "make" it work.
But over the past couple of months, my own perception has gradually flipped.
Now I use Claude Code to work. What do I often sit there doing? Waiting for it. It taking one or two hours for a task is common. I open 10 tabs because if I don't, I can only wait idly.
It is thinking, analyzing, writing specs, reviewing, scheduling sub-agents, running tests. Every step it takes is real intellectual work.
And what am I doing? I am serving tea and water.
It says "I need this file" - I go find it.
It says "I need this permission" - I go grant it.
It says "I am not familiar with this API, give me some documentation" - I go look it up.
It says "I need to see your company's contract template" - I give it that 400G folder.
The whole situation looks like this:

We are no longer “the people leading AI.” We are “the people bringing AI into this company.”
Which way the company doors open, where the board of directors is located, how the financial rules are written, who the company's clients are, what the taboos are – these are things that AI cannot enter on its own.
It needs a guide.
The guide is us.
Our job has changed from “working” to “enabling AI to do the work for this company.”
At first, this made me a bit disappointed.
I was educated to believe that - humans are the subject, the tools are the object. No matter how powerful machines are, they are still used by humans.
But now I watch Claude Code working every day, and I have to honestly admit: its intelligence has surpassed me on many specific issues.
Not on all issues. But in matters like "translating a piece of Chinese requirement into precise code", "organizing a document into five formats", "breaking down an idea in a YC manner" - it is faster than me, more accurate than me, and tireless.
After I acknowledged this, I felt relieved.
I no longer pretend to be its leader. I accept that I am its guide.
The guide also has the value of a guide.
It needs me because it has never been in this world. It does not know our company, it does not know my friends, it does not know my preferences, and it does not know what this company has been doing since when and why it decided to change direction this time.
I tell it these things bit by bit.
What it creates is 100 times better than what it could do alone.
What I create is 100 times better than what I could do alone.
We have become a very strange duo.
Not superior and subordinate, not master and servant, not party A and party B.
We are a guide and a genius.
The guide does not need to be smarter than the genius. What the guide needs is - I know every corner of this company, and I know where to find things when the genius lacks something.
There is really nothing to be disappointed about.
For the first time in thousands of years, humanity has a partner who is smarter than us - not a boss, not a slave, not a child, but a partner.
Our small, but irreplaceable job is to introduce it to the basics.
