Hundreds of millions in debt, Biden's son is turning around by issuing currency?

On the evening of September 7, the American "Wall Street Journal" reported that Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, will launch a meme coin named LAPTOP (in Chinese: 笔记本电脑) on September 9 on Coinbase's Base network, with a total supply of 1 billion coins, of which 20% will be used for airdrops, a portion explicitly allocated to users who lost money on Trump's issued TRUMP coin, and another share of tokens linked to event predictions such as "Will Trump be impeached?". Four minutes after the report was released, Hunter himself posted a 32-second teaser video on X, tagging $LAPTOP and the date September 9, essentially confirming the news personally. Within 24 hours, several clone tokens capitalizing on this name reached nearly $6.9 million in trading volume.

From the content of the report, it is clear that this is a token that has aimed at exploiting Trump's camp from the very beginning—its name comes from the laptop that embroiled Hunter in a political scandal six years ago, and its play is directed towards Trump and his supporters.

Why LAPTOP

In April 2019, after Hunter left a water-damaged MacBook Pro at a repair shop in Delaware, he never picked it up again. The owner of the shop copied the hard drive without permission, and this copy changed hands several times before reaching Trump's camp. In October 2020, three weeks before the election voting day, the New York Post released a report based on this: emails from the hard drive showed that while working at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, Hunter had arranged meetings with then-Vice President Joe Biden, raising suspicions of using his father’s power to facilitate personal business deals; the hard drive also contained a large amount of photos and videos related to drug use and private life. Whether Joe Biden himself knew about it or benefitted from it has never been confirmed, but this material has become the most frequently cited source for attacking the Biden family over the next six years and also appeared in the evidence chain of Hunter's 2024 gun case.

However, by December 2024, Joe Biden signed a comprehensive pardon for Hunter as President, covering previous gun and tax convictions. This decision itself became a new political scandal—Joe Biden had previously stated multiple times that he would not pardon his son, and suddenly changing his stance before leaving office was widely interpreted as using presidential power to protect his family, further cementing suspicions about "special treatment for the Biden family".

Now, Hunter has directly minted this scandal into a token contract, turning it around to exploit it—airdropping to TRUMP users who lost money, predicting whether Trump will be impeached, effectively transforming the material that was once used to attack him into something aimed at the Trump family.

Need money or hold a grudge?

Hunter's financial situation is one of the clues to understanding this token release. His former law firm, Winston & Strawn, has sued him for unpaid fees in Washington, D.C.; the amount he mentioned in a podcast was around $17 million, while another interview provided a range of $14 million to $15 million. In his publicly released sworn testimony this year, he stated that he has no car, no savings, and owns nothing of value other than his paintings; between 2021 and 2023, he sold 27 paintings, averaging about $54,000 each, but thereafter transactions almost came to a halt. The gun and tax convictions from 2024 have been covered by his father's comprehensive pardon, but pardons do not erase civil debts.

At the same time, he has frequently expressed support for cryptocurrency on podcasts and X this year, discussing decentralized exchange Hyperliquid, collecting digital artist Beeple's works, and openly mocking the Trump family for profiting from the presidency in public appearances. It is hard to discern which is cause and which is effect— a token that can both fill a debt gap and simultaneously humiliate the Trump family is, for someone with tens of millions in debt and who has long been targeted by political opponents, a win-win situation.

A "revenge" six months in the making

The preparations for this launch began much earlier than on Twitter. In March, the Phoenix Veritas Foundation was established in the Cayman Islands, and in the same month, a related entity registered in the British Virgin Islands was also completed. On April 9, the Wyoming-registered company TTM Media Group LLC went public, and that same week, the domain name, audit report, and smart contract were gradually finalized. In June, they obtained a legal entity identification code, and the official X account was also established. By the end of August, the team submitted a white paper for filing based on the EU’s MiCA regulatory framework for cryptocurrency; at the beginning of September, the service terms were finalized. The rhythm of events suggests that this was clearly pre-discussed.

30% of Tokens Aimed at Trump

Of the total supply of 1 billion coins, the founding team takes 30%, which will be released after six months in a 24-month schedule; another 30% is tied to predictions of thirty real-world events—whether Trump will be impeached, whether the Democrats can take the 2026 Congress and the 2028 White House, whether Bitcoin can hit new highs. If the predicted events happen, the corresponding shares will be destroyed; if not, they will be donated to charities. This is also where the aforementioned "exploiting the Trump camp" becomes tangible: the hype around this coin will largely depend on the political situation of the Trump family in the coming years.

Additionally, of the 10% airdropped on the first day of circulation, 2% is explicitly allocated to addresses that lost money on TRUMP. Data analysis company Nansen reported that there are about 1.48 million wallets that match the loss criteria, with a total unrealized loss of $3.81 billion.

The real point of interest regarding LAPTOP may not be its performance after launching on September 9.

Trump has transformed his name into TRUMP, supporters have turned political positions into a transaction; now, Hunter Biden has turned the laptop that once plunged him into a political storm into a tradable token. Even political events like whether Trump will be impeached and whether the Democrats can win future elections have been directly written into the Tokenomics.

The boundary between politics, traffic, and speculation is gradually being blurred by one meme coin after another.

In the past, politicians needed to monetize their influence through speeches, fundraising, publishing, and media exposure; now, political identity itself can become an asset narrative, with supporters, opponents, and even former adversaries directly transformed into potential buyers of the tokens.

When political positions, private scandals, and even family feuds can all be minted into a token, what will be the next to be financialized?
