Deep Tide Guide: After two months since its launch, Robinhood Chain has locked up $2.1 billion in assets, but the founder-level executives have acknowledged that this is just the beginning. This article breaks down the true on-chain ambitions of this brokerage giant: it is not about creating a chain, but about moving stocks, private equity, real estate, and even AI agents onto the blockchain. For practitioners, this is the clearest statement of traditional financial giants entering the space.

No matter how fresh Robinhood Chain, tokenized stocks, and the company's increasingly aggressive crypto positioning may seem, Robinhood's broader argument aligns with judgments we are already familiar with:

There will no longer be a distinction between "crypto markets" and "traditional markets;" there will only be a unified market, which will increasingly operate on blockchain rails.

This is one of the clearest conclusions we gathered from our latest conversation with Johann Kerbrat, the head of Robinhood's crypto business. He reiterated that long-held view: blockchain upgrades outdated links in existing markets: limited trading hours, fragmented trading venues, slow settlement speeds, geographical restrictions, and financial products trapped in isolated systems.

Robinhood believes that blockchain will transform these areas, and I share this belief, allowing the market to operate year-round and enabling assets to flow freely between applications.

This process has already started, and Robinhood clearly wants a piece of the pie.

Current Status of Robinhood Chain

Although Robinhood is ambitious here, one of the most informative aspects of this conversation is Johann's view that the integration of Robinhood Chain with Robinhood itself is still in a very early stage.

Just two months after launch, this chain has accumulated $2.1 billion in tokenized assets, with $1.5 billion already deposited in various applications, and trading volumes continue to reach new highs. However, Johann stated that the bigger surprise internally is not these impressive figures, but the developer activity.

Robinhood took years to build this chain, originally expecting it to be a challenge to attract external teams to build on it. But Johann claimed that developer activity ranks among the top across all chains, and the team has started to create products that even Robinhood did not anticipate. The most obvious example is the meme coins combined with tokenized stocks, which have fueled the current wave sweeping Solana and Base.

While these activities have helped Robinhood Chain establish a foothold, Johann emphasized that it is still in the early stages of connecting this chain to Robinhood's broader product ecosystem. Robinhood Earn is one of the first features integrated into the main app, allowing eligible US users to earn through lending USDG via Morpho; meanwhile, Robinhood Wallet has integrated Robinhood Chain and other on-chain venues.

The key takeaway is that before Robinhood truly activates its unique distribution engine, Robinhood Chain has already garnered substantial activity.

What comes next is directly embedding what Robinhood Chain and the broader on-chain economy can offer into the products that Robinhood's existing customers are already using.

What Does Robinhood Want to Build?

To achieve this, Robinhood focuses on three product paths.

The first is to run tokenized spot assets and derivatives side by side.

When placed together, traders can hedge spot exposure with perpetual contracts, establish leveraged positions, arbitrage price differences between the two markets, or build strategies using both.

Robinhood has already provided early interactions in this regard through Robinhood Wallet and Lighter, but only for users outside the United States, hoping this situation changes soon.

Secondly, expand the range of tokenized assets.

Johann emphasized that stocks are just the beginning. He mentioned private equity, real estate, art, and more commodities, stating that Robinhood aims to either tokenize assets on its own under certain conditions or collaborate with issuers of existing related products.

The goal is clear: to bring more assets from around the world onto the same programmable rails, then let the markets and developers explore what can be built on top of them.

Finally, AI agents.

As I wrote earlier this year, agents can help financial platforms turn a pile of previously unrelated products and data into a usable system.

For Robinhood, this connectivity is organized in the form of its agent trading MCP. Users can have their agents pull research from Morningstar or in-depth market data, paired with a chosen on-chain indicator to identify opportunities worth executing.

With Robinhood's continuously expanding product matrix, you effectively have an engine capable of freely moving between perpetual contracts and spot, stocks and crypto assets, on-chain and off-chain.

Johann himself mentioned that his agent has previously discovered strategies that he himself did not know how to build.

It is important to clarify that while Robinhood's on-chain ambitions may be grand, its intentions regarding what it wants to build are not vague. Johann stressed that Robinhood is not interested in owning every layer of this new financial stack. It prefers to focus on those products that only it can provide (which is where its distribution capabilities, user experience, and existing brokerage infrastructure truly constitute advantages), while incorporating the foundational achievements already developed in the crypto space.

I specifically point this out because as chains mature, we may see more on-chain applications integrated into Robinhood.

What Are the Barriers They Face?

The primary factor is regulation, or rather, the lack of regulation.

Robinhood has already offered some products overseas that it cannot currently provide to US users. Its new stock tokens are not open to Americans, and its Lighter integration remains unavailable in the US.

Although the regulatory environment is clearly advancing, Johann has repeatedly mentioned that it remains very fragmented.

There are rules from the SEC and CFTC, different licensing regimes across states, staking rules depending on user location, and unresolved issues surrounding lending, DeFi, perpetual contracts, reporting, and taxation.

Even the SEC's newly announced innovation exemption for tokenized stocks (which Johann calls an important step forward) lasts only five years and imposes restrictions on assets and trading volume. For a publicly traded brokerage firm, this is complex terrain, and Robinhood remains cautious about the potential consequences of shifts in regulatory winds.

There's more content in the full program, and I recommend checking it out.

If this chain continues to develop, while Robinhood integrates more parts into its brokerage business, this company will increasingly resemble that "preferred" entry point, bringing ordinary retail investors into the upgrades that the on-chain market can bring to finance.
