a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently discussed the U.S. government's Office of Personnel Management (OPM) focus on returning federal employees to the office, noting that Washington D.C. federal office buildings are currently only 25% occupied on average. He pointed out that many federal employees work in the office one to two days a month, with some even working only two days in two months, questioning whether this model aligns with the expectations of federal employment. Andreessen also mentioned that the OPM's priorities include optimizing staffing, reducing government spending, and streamlining regulation, stating that the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. He also questioned whether the president has the authority to mandate the return of federal employees to the office, and said the widespread adoption of remote work presents challenges to work efficiency. Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste," with reports showing that only 6% of federal employees regularly work in the office, with Musk noting that the number of full-time office workers could be as low as 1% after security and maintenance personnel are factored out.
