a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently expressed his views on the priorities of the U.S. government's Office of Personnel Management (DOGE) in a podcast. Andreessen stated that the department plans to encourage federal employees to increase the number of days they work from the office, highlighting that federal office buildings in Washington D.C. currently have an average occupancy rate of only 25%. He pointed out that many federal employees work from the office only one to two days a month, with some even going to the office only two days in two months, questioning whether such a model aligns with the expectations of being a federal employee.Andreessen also mentioned that DOGE's focus includes optimizing staffing, cutting government spending, and streamlining regulations, stating that the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. He also questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office, and expressed concerns about the challenge posed to work efficiency by the current prevalence of remote work.Previously, Trump advisors Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy had proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste." Reports suggest that only 6% of federal employees regularly work from the office, with Musk even pointing out that the percentage of employees who work full-time in the office, excluding security and maintenance personnel, could be as low as 1%.
