Today we broke ground on the Pedro Plains Irrigation Expansion Project, one of the most significant agricultural infrastructure developments in Jamaica’s modern history. This project will bring nearly 10,000 acres of fertile land under irrigation and support more than 6,000 farmers and households across southern St. Elizabeth. For decades, this plan has been spoken about, promised but never delivered. Now, it is finally moving from dream to reality under this administration. But this is not just about increasing the number of irrigated acres. It is part of a much larger vision to transform Jamaica into a food-secure nation. We are building out the infrastructure, irrigation, cold storage, farm roads, and agricultural economic zones so that farmers are not just tilling the land, but building viable, scalable businesses. We believe Jamaica has what it takes to feed itself. What was missing was the will, the political direction, the technical capacity, and the investment. We are now putting all of those pieces in place. Today is about nation building, food sovereignty, and economic empowerment.
